Oliver Jackson

Oliver Jackson is an internationally known painter and sculptor. Originally from St. Louis, Jackson taught as Professor of Art at California State University, Sacramento, from 1971 until his retirement in 2003. He has served as Visiting Artist/Artist in Residence at a number of universities and art schools, including Harvard University; School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem, NC; University of California, Santa Barbara; U.C. Berkeley; University of Iowa; University of Illinois; University of Hawaii, Hilo; California College of Arts and Crafts Summer Institute in Aix-en-Provence and Paris, and others. Jackson received a commission from the California Arts Council in 1986 for a painting for the State Office Building in San Francisco, and was commissioned that year by the U.S. General Services Administration to create a marble sculpture for the Federal Courthouse in Oakland.

Solo museum exhibitions include the Seattle Art Museum; St. Louis Art Museum; Newport Harbor Art Museum, Newport Beach, California; UC Berkeley Art Museum, Berkeley, California; Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, California; DeSaisset Museum, Santa Clara, California; and Fresno Art Museum, Fresno, California. In the Fall of 2002 Harvard University inaugurated the Sert Gallery in the Carpenter Center for Visual Arts with the collaborative installation Duo, featuring paintings by Oliver Jackson and music composed by Marty Ehrlich. Oliver Jackson’s works have been included in group exhibitions at numerous museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museo do Arte Moderno, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The Oakland Museum; San Jose Museum of Art, and many others.

Works by Oliver Jackson are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; The High Museum, Atlanta; New Orleans Museum of Art; The Oakland Museum; Orange County Museum of Art; Phoenix Art Museum; Portland Art Museum, Portland, Oregon; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; San Jose Museum of Art; Seattle Art Museum, and others.

Oliver Jackson lives and works in Oakland, California.
